Our little cattle adventure started in 2000, with a trip to the New York State Fair.We were looking to find some Polled Herefordsthat our son, Andrew, could grow upand work with in the coming years.Being that Andrew was around three at the timeand on my heels everywhere and anywhere, when it came to cows, we knew that a breeds temperwas first and foremost. So that in mind ruled out a very popular black breed.Anyways, not having any luck gaining the attentionof any of the Polled Hereford Breederson a non show day, left us pretty discouraged. After going home for a few days and wonderingwhat to do, we decided to give it another shoton the third rotation of the fair, which was Labor Day weekend. Also was a show day for the Santa Gertrudis Breeders.Having raised dairy heifers and being around cows all my life,I’ll never forget walking into the beef barn and seeing thoseBIG,RED,FLOPPY EAR,LOOSE SKIN THINGSand wondering what aSANTA GERTRUDIS was.We just stood there looking at these cows in awe. Then the breeders came, not one, but all the breeders.Andrew was walking one on a halter at three years oldand that heifer just towered over him,You should have seen my wife’s eyes bug out.A year of digging for a negative on the breed, provided nothing but positives. In 2001, we bought out the herd ofJerry and Marge Bobier (Bobiers Farm)Chenango Forks, New York (Herd#4631)With their herd sire: Bud, a huge Ward Cattle Farm bull weighting over3000lbs and his Great grand sire being NC 80-81 Mountain Man 810.We added some Dist.6 cattle that yearalong with the heifer Andrew was walking around….and here we are today. MCMomentum is the Herd Sire nowalong with some great bloodlineswe have added over the years. The future is ours, no regrets andlooking to add moreSANTA GERTRUDISto our family.
